OK, we upgraded the software and I think you will all eventually agree that this is a much more robust platform. This is the same one used by all the large boards including Cruise Critic and FlyerTalk.
So, with that said, play around with it. Update your profile and preferences--there are a lot more preferences you can set for yourself.
If you experience any glitches, post here or email me at frenaye@tripso.com and I will address them as I can.
We will be tweaking and adjusting for a while so please be patient. I know that right now the old "rankings" are not there so if you were a gold poster--you are now a mere member, but that will change shortly.
Quick note, you can hover your mouse over any icon or link and it will explain what it does.
Personally, my three favorite features are the NEW POSTS link at the top which will display all the topics with new postings for any area that you have permission to access. Clicking this will display ONLY those topics.
Under QUICK LINKS there is the MARK ALL FORUMS READ (or something like that) link that will reset your read meter to zero so the next time you click NEW POSTS it will be from that point. I use it a lot when I scan the topics and realize I have said all I want to say.
Also under QUICK LINKS the SUBSCRIBED THREADS link is great. In your profile I believe there is an option on how you handle your "subscriptions". You can have no notification, instant email notification, or daily email notification of updates to your subscribed threads. You can also choose if you want to subscribe automatically to all threads you post in. In the threads themselves, if you want to lurk and not post--there is an option to subscribe to that thread manually.
So there are a few tips. Fire away! ANd as always, thanks for the support!

Right now, the default is to display the newest posts first in a thread. This is not necessarily the newest TOPIC. So, if someone dredges up a topic frm a few years ago and posts a reply to it, it will move to the top of the list. Called bumping.
I am looking into an issue about displaying topics. Some of the "rooms" are showing as empty, but I believe it is a setting where it does not display posts older than ____ days. We will get this changed, but you can also control this in the User CP. Simply set your THREAD DISPLAY OPTIONS to SHOW ALL THREADS....

also i think, if you go into the admincp, and manage all the forum permissions, you can set so all the topics show up.
admincp-->forum manager-->"default view age(default cut-off for thread display)" change that to show all threads.

Apparently the new forums have by default entered everyone's birthday as November 30th. If you want to display your birthday, please correct it in your profile (USER CP) and if not, please delete it in your profile!

Ok. I searched the FAQ and can't find an answer on this.
You click on New posts and it shows you the new posts. You click on a topic and it takes you to that topic. Is the only way to get to the next new post is to click on New Posts again? I've never used that function in the old board so I'm wondering whether it's the same.

Somehow (or automatically) I subscribed to this thread. I saw this in my CP. I tried to unsubscribe and I got the following:
YOU HAVE BEEN BANNED FOR THE FOLLOWING REASON:
NO REASON SPECIFIED
DATE THE BAN WILL BE LIFTED: NEVER
In fact, when I try to manage my subscriptions in my CP I get the same.
I took a screenshot, but when I tried to upload it, it said that I exceeded my quota by 13.4KB. The size of the file is only 13.6KB (16KB on disk). It's a JPG and, according to the attachment chart, I can upload up to 19KB.
???????
Stephen,
I'm glad I'm not the only one banned forever!
Mine came about when I clicked on the calendar.

New posts will result in a screen showing every thread that has a new post since your last log in in the forums in which you have the permissions to access. This is done via cookies I believe. Then, by clicking on that thread, it will take you to that thread for you to read. On the left of the thread title, there will propbably be a little icon looking like a down arrow. Clicking on this will take you to the first unread post in that topic.
As to the banning stuff...that's a tweak we need to work on

I can tell you that the Forums are much better today than they were yesterday. Many things which weren't working are now working, such as the "Member List." Some things are still not working, or at least not working correctly, but John is on top of things and getting there.
As to your question on getting to "new posts," I think I can help you there.
Once you get to the list of new posts, take a look at some of the new graphical symbols. The symbol http://www.tripso.com/forum/images/buttons/firstnew.gif (http://www.tripso.com/forum/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=9829) to the left of the topic means, "Go to first new post." If you click on this, it should take you to the topic you've chosen and to the first new post, of any you haven't seen before in the list of posts for that topic. For example, if there have been 3 posts since your last visit to that topic, it should take you to the first of the 3.
If you want to go directly to the last post in the topic, and this works everywhere whether you're looking for a new post or just the last post, click on the http://www.tripso.com/forum/images/buttons/lastpost.gif (http://www.tripso.com/forum/showthread.php?p=41177#post41177) (means, "Go to last post") symbol to the right of the name of the person who's made the last post (It's in the last post column.) and that will take you to the last post.
Stephen, I think that this follow-up to John's explanation will finish answering your question. Let us know if you have any more, or find other things which don't work.
Thanks.

What's the time limit on the automatic log out? That drives me crazy. I tend to leave Tripso open rather than log out every time I go do something else (like work  ). So when I come back and try to post or reply... Sometimes, too, it takes me awhile to get my thoughts together on a reply and it will log me out in the middle of replying  . What's the scoop there and can we adjust it?

What's the scoop there and can we adjust it?Hi Ann,
When you login a cookie is set. From what I can tell so far, as long as the cookie is set when you login, you should be able to stay logged in. Once I logged into the new forum software, I have remained logged in since, except for the times I have purposefully logged out. So you need to have cookies turned on in your browser. I will assume you have them turned on, since you needed them on in the old forum software to stay logged in.
Next, when you login you do have to put a check mark in the "Remember me?" box to the right. Without that box checked, you will be automatically logged out everytime you leave the forums.
If you're using Firefox, set your cookies from Tools>Options>Cookies to "Keep cookies until they expire."
If you're using IE set your privacy to medium from Tools>Internet Options>Privacy and you should be ok.
Let me know if this helps. If you're still having problems with sustaining your login, I will need to know which browser, including version, you're using, and then we can go from there.

Thanks, Ned and John. Here's the issue that I'm having. I click the New Posts link in the menu bar. It shows me all of the new posts across all of the forums. I click on the first new topic. Isn't there a way to get to the next new topic (regardless of the forum) without having to go back to the list? Was it this way also in the old forums?.

I will adjust the time out time! I agree it is a pain in the but.
Stephen--not sure I am understanding you? Using the NEW POSTS it shows all new posts across all categories (there may be three in TERROR, one in OFF TOPIC, etc). You can then determine which interest you. Clicking on the TITLE takes you to the first post. Clicking on that little down arrow takes you to your first unread post.

Here's another "bug" that I found. In my Options, I set it to display messages LINEAR-NEWEST FIRST. But when I go to the forums, the only forum following this rule is this one (NEW FORUMS Q&A). All the others are still LINEAR-OLDEST FIRST.

Timeout issue. Working on it but a workaround is to select REMEMEBER ME when you sign in.
Stephen--hang tight on the correspondent.adjusting permissions.
Not sure on the linear thing not working across all forums. Will look into it.
Avatars. THey will need to be reloaded if they were too big. The old system would shrink them to fit (have not found that option here) they need to be less than 150 X 150 pixels. This can be done in MS Paint or any photo editing program. Typically under EDIT and then somethign like RESIZE one of the options should be pixels (versus inches or cm) they do not need to be square, but the longest side cannot be more than 150 pixels long.

Timeout was 15 minutes. This has been changed to an hour.
...is missing. Do I have to reload it myself, or is this something that will get "tweaked" in the next software fix?
RJ, we saw your Avatar yesterday. It was filling an entire page. In the old software, you could load any size Avatar and the software would reduce it automatically for display. Yours looked like it was more than 500x500 pixels. As John mentioned, they need to be less than 150 X 150 pixels. If you resize it and reload it, it will then work great.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Isn't there a way to get to the next new topic (regardless of the forum) without having to go back to the list? Was it this way also in the old forums?.Stephen, I tried using the <<Previous Thread | Next Thread >> to see if that worked to do as you described you wanted to navigate through the new posts, but it didn't work. In fact, at this point, I'm not exactly sure what that does when you're working from a subset of topics and posts, which you are when you've sorted out the "new posts," instead of a particular forum as a whole.
Certainly for now, once you've finished in one new post, in a topic, to get to another new post in another topic, you're going to have to click on "New Posts" again to find the next new post you want to read.
There is good reason for this anyway. If you could go from new post to new post, a cookie would have to be set to tell it where the next one is. If in the meantime a newer post was made, you'd miss it, if you're depending on cookies. This way, by going back to new posts, by clicking on "New Posts" you're always getting a refreshed and accurate list.
This is the way the old sofware worked, by the way.

Thanks, Ned.
Another thing that I found:
The icon on the left of the top-level forum is in orange, telling me there are new posts. So I go thereto the sub-forum and read it. I get out clicking on the sub-forum level and the icon is still orange. So I go, "Huh. I must've missed something." I go back, and no topics are in bold.
Basically, it takes a couple of going back in and out before the icon is refreshed correctly.

It seems that any topic I reply to I get automatically subscribed to. Of course if I try to unsubscribe I get the BANNED message.
Thanks, Ned.

I have found if I go to the top section, where it shows you a map of the the forum tree your in, and click on the forum the thread is in, the icon will properly change. If you just use the browser's back button the icon will not change.
Don't forget, for now, the threads are not listed in the newest first order, so you'll have to click on last post column header to reorder the thread list to newest first with the stickies on the top of the column.

I do caution, that because I'm a moderator, some of my things work while they may not for you, however, this worked for me before my moderator settings were reset.
Check out your ability to edit your subscriptions again, as I can now edit mine. You may be able to edit yours now as well.

Hi, Ned. That's what I do. I don't use the back button.

Stephen--go to the USER CP and under OPTIONS there is a MESSAGING section (2nd section from the top) There is a subscription drop down box...and you can chose how to be notified...nonotice, instant, daily, etc. There is an option for DO NOT SUBSCRIBE. Change this and you should be ok.
