It's about time, but the restrictions are still ridiculously tight without any real increase in safety and security coming from the restrictions.

Britain to relax carry-on bag rules Friday

LONDON, England (AP) -- Britain is relaxing restrictions on carry-on baggage on Friday, allowing musical instruments and essential liquids to be carried aboard aircraft, the government announced.

Severe limits on carry-on baggage were imposed after police announced on August 10 that they had broken up an alleged plot to bring down U.S.-bound aircraft with liquid-based explosives.

The Department for Transport said Thursday that one carry-on bag would be allowed, with a new larger maximum size of 56 centimeters by 45 centimeters by 25 centimeters (about 22 inches by 18 inches by 10 inches)...

...Musicians with instruments too big to go into hand luggage will be able to take them on board after the instrument has been screened.

"We will never compromise on the safety of passengers, but it is right that we continually strive to strike the right balance between properly robust security and arrangements which minimize the burden on passengers and business," the department said in a statement.

"These adjustments have been made in the light of a detailed assessment of the measures introduced in August and address that twin aim."Go to Britain to relax carry-on bag rules Friday (http://www.cnn.com/2006/TRAVEL/09/21/britain.airports.ap/index.html) to read the entire article.

British rules are written the same way the US rules are written. They permit each and every TSA agent to disregard the rules if they believe doing so will stop a threat, so you still could be out of luck with that cello. Apparently, you have to hope they haven't heard you play. It's the same for me and a trumpet.

Okay, I am NOT sitting in front of Bob on the plane.

I played the trumpet in the high school marching band. During a football game our side scored a touch down, at which time the band is supposed to jump up in the stands and play the victory song. I have no idea why Carl, one of the trombone players, ended up behind me (they are supposed to be up front) but he whacked me hard in the back of the head with his trombone slide, causing me to split my lip on my own mouthpiece, followed by a graceful tumble ass over teakettle through the opening in the stands resulting in both me and my trumpet landing with a thump under the bleachers.

And I dinged my bell on one of the metal supports.

I crawled out the back on my hands and knees, marched a few blocks through the streets of town to my Aunt Betty's house in full uniform (a rather disheveled, pissed off one-man-band parade of sorts) and never went back.

Thus ends my career playing that instrument. I still have the trumpet and am willing to part with it for the right bid. I'll knock off a few bucks for the ding. B)
