Since airlines have joined in "alliances" of around ten, you cannot choose your airline anymore. For my flight from Vancouver, BC to the Middle East I chose a certain airline, whose seats, from long experience, always have plenty of legroom. The ticket was more expensive than that of other companies, but for such a long flight it was worth it.

I actually flew in a plane of that company till Montreal and then had to transfer to a plane of another company, whose seats were extremely narrow. so that I sat in an uncomfortable postion for about 70 percent of the trip. Still, for the whole trip the company I had booked was considered my host.

Of course you can still choose your airline. Even in Canada.

Whenever an airline is trying to sell you a seat they are required to tell you if they are buying that seat from another airline. It is right there plain and simple. You have the option of accepting or not. Nobody if forcing anything on you.
