View Full Version : No foo aboard the Polynesia

There are sooo many cruises I have yet to take and the Polynesia is definitely a must. I love the 'foo-fooness' of big cruises - I love dressing up and bring oodles of clothes. (except thru the airport) I love the shows and casino. But the idea of shorts and a tank and yo-ho-ho sounds delightful to this wanna-be pirate!

Hi Mary,
My sister has taken some windjammer cruises and loves them!!
She says they not only spoil you but that as the article says, they are able to stop at places that bigger ships can't..
Someday I would like to try to take one too..
Like you, I also like the big ships but this one sounds like alot of fun..

I have taken two Windjammer Cruises and I'm hooked for life. Before I went on a Windjammer I had sailed with RCCL, NCL, CCL, Princess, HAL and I thought I had experienced cruising, then I took my first Windjammer cruise and discovered a wonderful world of informal, relaxed and fun cruising where you had the time and ability to get to know all of the passengers and crew. It wasn't the same old grind of the larger ships and most interestingly the passengers helped to decide what the itinerary was for that sailing.

For entertainment in the evenings it was a combination of local talent that would come aboard and play music for the passengers entertainment and dancing or it would be things like crab races or costume parties where the theme was announced the day of the party and you had to make your costume with what you had available in your luggage, on board the ship or ashore.

Dining isn't as fancy as it is on the larger ships, both in terms of attire and in terms of the fare. Dressing for dinner consisted of putting on a tee shirt and deck shoes. Dinners consisted of a soup, salad, an entree, a roll and dessert. Of course you could get seconds, thirds, forths as they always seemed to make enough to feed two or three shiploads of passengers.

It is a much more initimate cruise which allows you to visit places that are off the beaten path and to make new friends that you stay in touch with for years afterwards. For me, Windjammers are the only way to cruise now.

Sounds good to me!!
We own a company and it is hard at times for my hubby to get away so I would love to travel with others..
Not this year, we have 2 trips already planned, the Maui trip and the Key West besides going to the FL house so this year is not good but maybe we can check it out and do one later..

Mercwyn, thanks for the info. It looks so relaxing and cozy to me.

Cindy, my hubby doesn't cruise - so I'm always looking for someone to cruise with. My girlfriend Reggie comes with me a lot - she works across the hall from me.

However, I don't think she's interested at all in a Winjammer cruise! I'm booked for March '07 but possibly open either in the fall or '08!! You're on!

I personally don't prefer cruises. They're okay, but not my 1st choice. However, I would LOVE to go on a windjammer. I just feel it would be for me. Some day soon, maybe by next year, I really want to do it.

Travel - you got it - when does football start? There's always spring and/or the pirate cruise in August. (yar---I loves the pirates)

Stacynan - True - I would love to make it next year - but not sure about that.

I wanted to do the tripso for a cause cruise this Oct. but am saving all my moolah for the (more expensive) upcoming freedom of the seas cruise.

I think that this will be awesome!!

Mary, 2008 football will probably start Labor Day weekend, it's not official over until the last bowl game sometime before January 7, 2009. Considering the look of our incoming freshman class, I might actually have to worry about that level of bowl game.

I, too, am unable to do the Cruise for a Cause, even though I really wanted to go. There's a game I have to be at that weekend, and I'm also doing a cruise from Athens to Marseilles later that month when we have no home games and no away games I have to attend.

This is exciting....I have always wanted to do a Windjammer cruise!

After reading this thread, I just had to laugh. To the non-agents out there: we have a saying: "Never book family and friends". You can see why by the see-sawing on this thread.

"Yes, I want to go!" "I wanna go, too!" "Let's do it" "Get all the details, and set it up!"

"Uh, not THAT week, I've to a party to go to.", "$800.00?, Oh, well I've got to buy a new outdoor deck this year, so I can't afford it" "I want to go, but not in the summer. Will you get the prices for the spring? I don't care which week in the spring, any one will do!"

It reminds me of my girlfriends back in the '80's. Every time we'd go out for happy hour, they would get buzzed and want me to plan a trip to the Bahamas. After many false starts (hey, I was buzzed too!), I finally told them I wouldn't do anything unless they gave me a check or credit card number on the spot.

I just love that when I am out with friends and whoever, they find out I am an agent and they start "How much would it cost for this? or that?" My reply: "Call me at work tomorrow" Period! end of question and answer session.

I don't care which week in the spring, any one will do!

Me: So I have it all set up for March __.

Them: Oh. Well. I can't do it then, [the kids are off of school/the husband has a business trip/I have a business trip/pick one, any one]. Did you check every other week? Maybe they are cheaper? Ummm. Maybe summer....

Me: Kill me now and put me out of my misery....

I don't really see any see-sawing here. The Tripso Cruise for a Cause was something a bunch of people requested, it was scheduled, some can go, some can't, and those of us who couldn't, but had said it was a great idea, just said why we couldn't.

Mary suggested a Windjammer, which is a great idea, and others thought so, too. My "not during football season" was just a little whine about not being able to do the TCFAC cruise I really wanted to do this time. Mary had every right to make a time request because it was her idea to begin with. If we're lucky enough to set it up as the next TCFAC, some of us will be able to go and some of us won't. I plan multiple group trips every year and sometimes people who requested a particular destination can go and sometimes they can't. But I don't stop doing it. I just say, "well, sorry you're gonna miss a really good time....maybe next year."

Sorry, travel, I meant no offence!

I love my friends dearly, but they do tend to drive me crazy sometimes. The see-sawing can escalate, believe me.

That's what friends are for, aren't they? To drive us crazy and to be there for us when one of the other friends drive us crazy....!?!

I think we TA's can be a bit hyper-sensitive about "casual" travel requests because our insane relatives, friends and associates tend to bombard us with them in the craziest places.

I was pulled over by a local police officer for having a burned out headlight (didn't know it since it was only dusk) on the way home from work. He recognized me from the agency so I had to sit in the back seat of the cruiser while he wrote me a ticket and grilled me about prices for an all-inclusive Jamaica vacation he wanted to take with his girlfriend.

I had my own (previous) MD lean forward in his pew during a church funeral and whisper, "how much would it cost to fly my family to Florida this Christmas?"

I fantasize about attending one of his relatives funerals and during the service lean over and say, "I've been thinking about having a colonoscopy. Whadda ya think about next Thursday?"

Yeah, we all have stories like that. It tends to make us jiggy and twitch in public a lot.
