I am staying at the Renaissance Hotel this coming weekend. Does anybody have any recommendations for inexpensive transportation to get there?

From the airport, a cab will be about $7.00 to $10.00 depending on the time of day and how bad traffic is heading north out of the airport. You can take the city bus from the airport, north on Paradise. I don't recall what the fare is anymore as I haven't used it in a while. It was a dollar two years ago but who knows today. I'm sure that there are shuttle services but I'm not sure how much they will save you over a cab nor how long they will take to get you to your hotel.

Cab is probably your best (cheapest) bet. I'll assume you are dealing with luggage so I would not recommend a bus...

A town car will run you at least $40 each way, probably more.

There are also a number of shuttle services (all of these have booths at airport somewhere, but I have never used them):

A cab is cheaper than a car. A cab will leave as soon as you're ready and go directly to your hotel. The bus or shuttles are cheaper than the cap, but take more time, and for me the savings in cash, doesn't equal the lost time as you make lots of stops.

You're adjacent to the Convention Center and a bit off the strip. If you take a cab, make sure it goes the back way, not up the strip which is often very busy and very slow.

If I'm not renting a car for side trips, then I always take a cab there when I go to a convention or conference.

Thanks! I would've thought a shuttle would save a lot but since it won't I'll plan on taking a cab.

As to luggage I'm hoping to go carryon only, but it depend s on if I can get all my liquid toiletries in a quart size bag. Since I'm going for a wedding, I'll be doing more primping than normal so I'm not certain if it will work.

Getting around town in Las Vegas - avoid the monorail! It is overpriced and not at all convenient - unless you like walking all the way through casinos that you weren't planning to visit.

The fare is $5 per ride - no matter how far you go. There is a $12 one day pass available.

If you rent a cheap car, you can make use of the valet parking at the hotels for free. You just have to tip the attendant when he brings the car.

If you know where you want to go and can avoid long stretches on Las Vegas Blvd, it's not a bad way to get around, just be wary of the lady at the Hertz desk!

I found the monorail pretty convenient for some things.. On the other side of the strip, I used the TI/Bellagio/etc shuttle a lot to move up and down that end.

Once on the Strip, I usually just walk.

That's our plan.

I'm going to Vegas for a wedding so there isn't a lot of sightseeing time anyways.

Both the airport and your hotel are on Paradise. Just get the cabbie to take you straight up Paradise. With average traffic, this should cost less than $20. If you get near the Strip, call shenanigans on your driver.

Well, the hotel I was originally booked in just dropped their rates. Now I need to know about transportation to the Flamingo instead.

Oooo. My unfavorite hotel in Vegas. The employees are wonderful there. It's old. It's been renovated. The renovations were great to the rooms and public spaces, but ... they didn't do nearly enough with the air handling systems there in my opinion. You can still smell the smoke from the 1st floor casino in the hotel portion of the Flamingo, even on non-smoking floors. I must be clear, however, that it's been two years since I was there last, so maybe they improved the system. I don't know. I do know for my next trip to Vegas, early next year I'm at the Bellagio. My convention hotel is the Flamingo again, but I made the decision not to stay there again.

Meanwhile, take the cab, and go the back way as if you were going to the Renaissance. The cab should take the left turn at Flamingo and Paradise. You still don't want to be on the strip for the ride in the taxi and this will do it.

Enjoy your time in Vegas.

Thanks for the warning about the possible smoke smell Ned. I'll make sure to bring extra benadryl and decongestants with me.
