What exactly is a hotel upgrade?

So many times in vacation ads it says, "Free hotel upgrade". Is that an obvious change like garden view to ocean view or is it just two twins to a queen? Or does it have to do with square footage and marble fixtures?

What is the best way to get an unadvertised upgrade?

That would refer to something like putting you in an ocean view room instead of a garden view, or ocean front instead of ocean view. Or if it is a location where the view is not importnat, it would be a larger room.

Could be a suite from a smaller room, or to a concierge floor or area where there are more amenities.
