Oh, I am so taking this route! Then I get the added benefit of shopping for a whole new wardrobe in the next size up...or two.

OMG, pulled pork sandwiches with the cold slaw on top are so darn good! We found these wonderful sandwiches when we were in NC. While I have had them elsewhere since, none can compare to the ones we enjoyed in NC. Yum!! We also had for the first time, in VA, sweet potatoe chips and fries. Very good, too!!! Let's not forget southern fried chicken:)

Enjoy your drive and just run around the car and rest stops to burn off the calories so you can enjoy your next I-95 meal:p When you get back home, you can go back to salads and lemon water until you fit back into your jeans!

Oh Man could I go for some of that barbecue right about now!!

There is a koi show in Charlotte, NC each November and an internet gang that I hang with usually has a pretty good gang show up. A couple of years ago one of the guys took up a collection and he did barbecue, the hotel allowed us to set up a pit in the back of the hotel as long as we fed them! OMG it was worth the drive!!!!

You wouldn't happen to remember the name of the joint and/or where it was, do you? I'm drooling!

I have 2 nieces in North Carolina. Trust me, in any small town, just look around the highways, and you'll find tons of these places! I've been in a dozen of them, and they are all good!

The dumpier looking, the better, particularly the ones with the barbeque pits on a screened porch out back!

Those sound good. You've got to love the South! I've had the local favorite in Jacksonville, the Slaw Dog.

No, I don't remember the names of the places. They were not fancy, just your basic neighborhood mom and pop joints. One was out on the Outer Banks, one off the highway outside of Greensboro and the other was in Asheville. I would consider a trip to NC again just for BBQ, it was that good!

I think food from the south is the most unpretentious of any region. It is basic, downhome and plentiful. Out here we have 'Calfornia Cuisine' which means small, fancy portions at huge prices. In VA, we stopped for lunch off the highway at a diner and had a great lunch (where I had my first sweet potatoe chips) for the 2 of us for $7, which included tip.

BTW, in Asheville, we ate at a place called Early Girl Eatery. I found it online before we left and made reservations since we were meeting up with my cousins for dinner. It was written up in a souther living magazine and we were very pleased with our choice. It was a charming place with fabulous food at incredibily low prices for being in a major city. While they didn't have BBQ on the menu, they did have lot of southern specialites which we all ordered and shared.
