Kairho, I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed reading your 1993 trip report and Joyce's report on the Lake Nasser cruise. I've been to Egypt twice (in 1983 and again in 1997), and visited many of the same places you write about.

Isn't it wonderful to go to Abu Simbel without the crowds? On my second trip, we managed to spend the night up there at a little hotel within walking distance of the site. We haunted the place, going first at midday, then in late afternoon-early evening, and again before dawn the next day. On the afternoon visit, we were completely alone at Nefertari's temple- as a matter of fact, the door blew closed upon us and left us in the dark. Thank goodness a flashlight is on my Egyptian must-carry list.
The next morning we walked back over, and arrived before the guards. The gate was unlocked, so we just went on in. It was within 2 weeks of Ramse's birthday (I see it is close to your birthday, too), so I really wanted to see the sun come up and shine straight into the shrine. Unfortunately, the outer door to the temple was locked, and there were no guards even about to offer baksheesh to open up. At least I saw the light shine on the door, though!

Did you bring sheesha stuff home? My boyfriend got 2 restaurant quality hookahs while he was over there (he spent several weeks on and off in Cairo on business back in the '90's). Every now and then we'll get one going. The apricot tobacco is my favorite, followed by the melon.

Anyways, thanks for taking me back vicariously!

My wife and I have wanted to go to Abu Simbel for a long time, and Egypt as a whole, including a trip down the Nile, but have never been able to do it for a variety of reasons. We won't make it this year, even if we manage to go to Israel later this year due to time obligations with friends there, but we are trying to plan it for our subsequent Israel/Middle East trip. It probably won't be until the spring of 2010, but one can dream.

I'm almost afraid to read them They might cause me to spend money to go now which I don't have. :p No, I haven't read them, but I'm going to have to now.

I missed this!

Thanks for the compliments. Our philosophy on web marketing is to have a lot of free information out there and then to be perceived as acknowledged experts when people wish to travel.

Our newest offering is the Lake Nassar cruise. We were the first to offer it in the US and I think we are still one of only a very few.

Kairha just landed in Cairo, in fact, a few hours ago and will be there for 2 weeks. We both will go back for a few days in November and then I'll be back, again!, in either January or March. Fortunately, we do get to do some touring although most of the visits are business.

Well I finally had time to go completely through the site and I can only say K, it's great. In a word, WOW!

Thanks, Ned, your comments are appreciated. It's a result of many years of web observation and getting "stuck" in inefficient sites. Plus really not being happy with all the flash and dash when only basic information is needed.
