Has anyone been through Friedrichshafen Airport?
I'm wondering about the roads around and distances to a hotel.

I'm going to be in London in April and have decided to make a quick trip over to Bavaria to see my 97 year old cousin. He is the keeper of the family records for the German branch of our family. Though he has shared lots of info, his papers are all hand written. They are Extremely neat and detailed, but it's a big chore to copy and mail.

This wil be an adventure for me, as I'll have no one to read maps as I drive and do not speak very much of the language!

Ryan Air goes from Stansted airport to Friedrichshafen airport. I've never flown with them, but for this type of trip they sound fine - especially since Friedrichshafen is closer to where I need to go than Munich is.

I'll arrive about 4:30 pm - head to a hotel and then make the 50 mile drive the next morning in daylight, visit with my cousin and stay in that area one night and then back the next day to Friedrichshafen and London.

Also - has anyone used a scanner in Europe? Any special needs? Does it need a heavy duty voltage converter? I've a very thin, light one that I can put in a carryon. Will it work?

Okay... I've never been through Freidrichshafen airport, but I did a little digging and found their website: http://www.fly-away.de/en/ . The site has an English version, and it looks like there's plenty of info there. (Side note: to get info on any German town, just type "www.(town name).de . Lots of these have English versions of their sites, too.) Also, if you look under "airport maps", there's a decent overview of the area with major roads (http://www.fly-away.de/en/travelinformation/airport-maps/area-map.html). There's also info for lodgings on the airport site, or check out the city's tourism website: http://www.friedrichshafen.ws/startseite/startframe.asp .

As for road maps, google provides halfway decent point-to-point directions on their map service. That said, I was immensely glad to have a good old-fashioned map with me last time-- I used a Michelin atlas of Germany, and was quite pleased with it. Also, consider getting a car w/ GPS--- the one I used in the rental I got was actually very good, and very helpful. (It even spoke English. :p)

As for the scanner, check it over. A lot of the newer computer-related equipment is automatically made for multiple voltages. I have a camera dock for my digital camera, and was pleasantly surprised to find out all I needed was a plug adapter.

I'm afraid I can't offer much more help-- I haven't been over by Bodensee/Lake Constance since I was a little kid. Still, if you got a question, feel free to ask...

Enjoy your trip!!

Thanks for the good words Alyson. I had looked at the maps and determined that it would be an easy drive, especially in daylight.
The GPS is a good idea too. I was trying to get mine to accept older Europe maps, but it won't do so (at least, so far)

I pulled out the thin scanner today (I've never used it) and discovered that it draws its power from just a usb port, so as long as the computer is plugged in, the scanner should work. Of course, I'll try it with the laptop before bringing it along...

I'm getting excited about this now! I made reservations for plane, hotels and a car today.

Glad to be of help.:) As you know, I'm gaga for the place, so anything I can do to help, I'm happy to. To borrow a line from a favorite TV show, "If they don't find ya handsome, they'll at least find ya handy." I actually really enjoy helping folks out while traveling-- I ended up translating somewhat, or just finding info for other tourists or recommending places to visit last time I was there, and I really got a kick out of it. (Now if I could only make a living at that.....):p

My trip to Stansted on the express train from London went without a hitch, as did the Ryan Air flight to Friedrichafen, Germany. The RyanAir flight was quite good. The legroom was better than on the trip over on Continental. The only thing I didn't care for was that there are no assigned seats - but they do load from both front and back and it's fast.
The plane actually left the gate a few minutes before it was scheduled to.
On arrival I picked up the rental car from EuropaCar. While I was sitting in the parking lot and trying to get my bearings in relation to the map and directions, the rental agent was leaving for the day. He asked where I was going - and told me to follow him. He took me right to the hotel parking lot! Judging by the number of turns we made, I'd still be looking for the place...
