View Full Version : Top Steakhouses in the World - What's your favorite?
Forbes.com has an interesting article on the "Best Steakhouses in the World (http://www.forbestraveler.com/food-drink/best-steakhouses-slide.html?partner=msnbc)."
Peter Luger’s, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Gene and Georgetti, Chicago
La Chacra, Buenos Aires
Moishe’s, Montreal
Le Severo, Paris
Doe’s Eat Place, Greenville, Miss.
Trattoria Sostanza, Florence
Stripsteak, Las Vegas
Porcao, Rio de Janeiro
Jess & Jim’s, Kansas City, Mo.I love a good steak, and while I try to eat red meat no more than three times per week including all meals, I still go to good steakhouses often.
I've been to 6 of the 10 on the list above, and will agree that Peter Luger's in Brooklyn is fabulous. I would move Jess & Jim's of Kansas City higher in the list, but that's me. The one on the list which I don't think belongs is Le Severo, of Paris. Frankly, I think the steak and overall meal I can get out of the Ruth Chris, Morton's, The Prime Rib, The Capital Grill, or Smith & Wollensky chains is far better than Severo. I thought the quality of their meat was the problem. I didn't feel it was truly "Prime, Aged Beef."
What's your favorite Steakhouse at home, or anywhere you've traveled throughout the world?

Have not been to any of them :(
But there is a great one on Las Olas Blvd in FLL--Jackson's STeakhouse! Mmmmm good!
We've been there with our neighbor who also owns a home in FLL. You're right Jackson's is excellent. I had forgotten about it.
I'm partial to their crab cakes for an appetizer, and their rack of lamb.

I like the dark ambiance. I had a recent reunion down there with my very first girlfriend and we spent most of the night there drinking and eating and catching up!
John, in your neck of the woods, I like the Capital Grille. I think the one in Baltimore is one of the best in the chain. Their meat quality is as good as anywhere.

Actually, there is a family run place here in Annapolis called Lewnes Steak House and it puts any Chart House, Ruth's Chris, Capital, Morton's to shame.
Another chain that I like is Flemings. They have like 140 wines by the glass!
I'll have to tuck that suggestion about Annapolis away for my older son. He's in Annapolis regularly. Thanks.

I've been to Doe's. Their tamales are better than their steaks and their steaks are great.

The best steak I ever had was at Morton's in San Francisco.
Smith & Wollensky's in NYC was the most disappointed I've ever been at a "name" steakhouse.
Another place I think is a tad overrated is Gibson's in Chicago, but that is because it has such an inflated reputation. It's really good, but it ain't the best in Chicago.
When in doubt, Ruth's Chris is fine with me. If it isn't prepared precisely as I like, they do it again. No muss, no fuss.

In addition to already mentioned places,
Berns in Tampa is good. Old and stuffy, classic steak house
In Orlando Charley's Steak House and Vito's Chop House are great places to go with friends
La Caballeriza in Buenos Aires was good with many choices of beef and sides.

Not a well known place, but Horse & Hounds in Ocala has some of the finest steaks available ... the owner is a bud of a local prime beef raiser/breeder.
Hollywood Prime in the Westin Diplomat, Hollywood, FL. I'm also a Morton's fan.
I don't know about the steak there, but I was not happy with the lamb when I ate there last summer. I too generally like Morton's, although not all Morton's are created equal.

I've not been to any on this list. I have enjoyed The Palm in Chicago, Morton's in Orlando and the my local favorite Charley's in Orlando.
I'm a Palm member. I consider the Palm in Chicago, located in the Swissôtel Hotel (which overlooks the Chicago River, although the Palm does not) on Wacker Drive to be the best Palm in the country. The ones in Boston and Tampa are excellent too. I put the ones in NYC and the one in PHL just above the middle of the pack of the 25 Palms world-wide. They're good, but I rather eat at other steakhouses in those cities. I find the Palm in Charlotte, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Washington D.C. definitely below par, and I personally will not return to any of them.
I've not been to either of the Orlando steakhouses you've mentioned, but will try Charley's later this year when I'm down there thanks to your recommendation.

I like the original Palm in NYC. For a good steak at a reasonable price, I also like Les Halles in that city as well.
I still like Manny's in Minneapolis best of anywhere I've been. It just used to be a local favorite when I lived there (just 3 blocks away) and have returned often after moving away. Now I see Zagat has named them one of the top five in the U.S. It's nice to see an old favorite receive some recognition. :)
I was at Manny's a few years ago during a UJR Biennial, and I concur that it was wonderful. It was an easy choice, as it was located in the Hyatt Regency Hotel Complex where we were staying, and it didn't disappoint us, after hearing from many it was great.
As said earlier, however, I don't hold any of the Palms in NYC with high esteem.

Ned; don't go on my reccomendation alone, I would be bummed if it didn't meet your expectations. I think service can be hit or miss; The OBT location is fairly well worn, I have been going for almost 20 years so I cut them a little slack.
We have alot to choose from here in town, Ruth Chris's, Morton's, Shula's.
I like Charlies best because the flavor imparted by the flame-grilling over a 1200-degree open pit, fueled with a combination of Oak & Florida citrus wood. I a T-Bone kind of guy this technique suits my palate. http://www.talkofthetownrestaurants.com/charleys.html
I have heard raves about Vito's Chop House as Jimtbay had mentioned earlier.

OK, I promise that if Charlies doesn't work out for us, I'll definitely blame, ... opps, not blame you. I sounds like it's worth it to try, so I will.
Hey every recommendation that people make, doesn't always work out. Last year we ate at the 5 star restaurant, Lacroix at The Rittenhouse Hotel. It's supposed to be one of the finest restaurants in the country. Well we ate there, and the meal was definitely not up to par, and the $135/person total dinner cost. We spoke to the Maître d' and the Chef, discussed the meal problems, and they gave us the meal at no charge. Frankly, that night, it wasn't worth it. In my opinion, when a restaurant charges about $170 per couple, appetizer, glass of wine, salad, entree, dessert, tax and tip, there shouldn't be an off night.

The venerable Manny's used to be in a more central (stand alone) downtown location but had to move to the Hyatt Regency when the block was redeveloped. I was a bit fearful that the move would hurt them, but they seem to have survived it well. I used to live right next door to that Hyatt but moved out of the city before Manny's headed south into my old back yard.
I looked them up on the web out of curiosity this morning and see they are opening a location in Miami and will feature stone crabs on their menu as well. That would no doubt be worth noting for future visits to that city.

Wow, no Dallas steakhouses were listed and we ARE steak country, the best in Dallas are III Forks and Del Frisco's in Far North Dallas and Bob's Chophouse just south of Love Field Airport. We have several up and coming places that have sprung up in the new Victory Park/Uptown areas of Dallas that are good as well.......
