This summer, my wife and I will be flying from New Orleans to visit relatives in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, then taking a train into Scotland for a few days, returning back to Newcastle for a couple of days, and then visiting more relatives in Connecticut on our way back home.

For the return flight, I found a connecting flight on Northwest out of Newcastle to Amsterdam to JFK with a 10-hour layover in Amsterdam. We would like to use the time to see a little of Amsterdam. I have been told everything from “I will need to retrieve our bags and go through Customs to get on the connecting flight (even if we don’t go into Amsterdam)” to “we can breeze through ‘Passport Control’ (Customs ?) to go into Amsterdam and don’t have to worry about our bags because they are checked through to JFK”.

Has anyone (a U.S. citizen) gone from Great Britain, enroute to the U.S., with a connecting flight through Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, and used the layover to go into Amsterdam? If so, can you shed any light on this as I have never flown outside of the U.S. and am not familiar with Customs requirements at Schiphol (we do have our passports, and I know no visas are required). Thanks! Brooks
