As the economy continues to slide into a recession many of us will be losing our jobs. I just lost mine in a huge corporate cutback, due to the rapidly slowing economy.

The air part of my planned vacation to Europe is already paid for but the hotels, food and tours are not.

This is my question to the TRIPSO Community: due to the ongoing economic crash, is it a dumb idea to travel/fly for leisure, if we have already lost our jobs or are likely to in the near future?

That all depends on what you have saved, purpose of the trip, likelyhood of becoming re-employed, how far away the trip is, etc

I think that answer really depends on your personal finances, along with how quickly you think you will be able to find employment. I'm rather conservative in this regard, I would not be going anywhere. I would not enjoy myself worrying about where and when my next paycheck was arriving and would be nickle and diming my vacation.

Sorry about your losing your job and hope that you find suitable employment soon.

I disagree that there is an "ongoing economic crash" or that "many of us will be losing our jobs." We are in a setback caused by people buying mortgages they cannot afford and energy concerns. But around here I see little evidence of people in a panic.

As to travel, you need to look at your own situation. Based on all the trouble you have travelling I would probably not recommend travel even if you had a job to return to.

Generally speaking, we've put most if not all of the money aside for a trip a while before the trip goes, so as long as we know income will be ok (we're a two earner couple), personally, I'd go, with the caveat of I might downgrade accomodations, etc to leave a little cushion.

Years ago I was in a bind with money and now am probably way too conservative with it. I think if I lost my job, I would still go. On the other hand, if my husband lost his job, I would probably not go. He makes way more money.
You will have to be the one to make that decision, it depends on your finances and do you have some money saved up?
I do wish you luck and hope you will soon find employment.

I think the answer here is that it depends upon your personal situation - do you have funds to live on for a few month, do you anticipate getting another job very quickly, .....?

BUT this is a good time to point out to folks that there are travel insurance policies that do cover employment issues - had you purchased such insurance, you would be ale to get your money back on the air tickets, though I must admit that this sort of insurance is best when you've prepaid everything in a package or cruise....

just curious, conversationist - is this for real? With all due respect, many of your stories seem a bit far-fetched.

Good point and I will add one thing. Most policies do have coverage if you were fired/terminated, etc but you would need to be employed for a certain amount of time. Typically the range is between 2-3 years of consecutive employment with that company to qualify for coverage.

I don't think so.... I think that economic will not crash all companies want more and more qualified persons. They want persons with lots experience. My question is how can I have experience if no one wants to hire me?

Conversationist, I am curious, have you made a decision? What guided the path you chose?

I wonder if he is the same "conversationist" that I've noticed on another board - if one and the same he/she loves to "pull your leg".
