Yeah, we know, Americans are getting bigger and restaurant portions are partly to blame. But we still stand in awe of these eight purveyors of really giant eats.

We used to kid a friend about going to Amarillo and eating that huge steak! I think he actually dd make a go of it once but couldn't force himself to eat the whole thing.

I am personally not in awe of any of these places, or places like them. I think that the portions are stupid and unhealthful.

I kind of agree with you, Ned. This country seems to worship gluttony, to our peril and detriment. It's probably an uncool (cliche?) thing to worry about, but I often think about the massive amount of food we waste as a society when a lot of people go without.

I know you can't ship the uneaten half of a giant cheeseburger to Somalia, but I certainly don't feel right about our wastefulness in that regard.

You know what I find ironic (and there's some karma involved)?

A restaurant in New York produced (I think) a cake that was worth $25,000 because it had all kinds of expensive stuff including a bracelet. The next day, the health department closed it down because it was full of cockroaches and mice and the like.

I think they call that payback karma. :D

Here's the story on that NYC eatery:

While serendipity may be the art of finding pleasant things by chance, what health inspectors found at celebrated eatery Serendipity 3 was not very agreeable.
