Your rights and what will happen are two different things. I think that a strike action on UAL will happen (if it does) shortly after the 19th of this month. If it is still ongoing when you leave you will not get there on time and may miss your vacation. The other alternative is that United won't be there and the score is the same in the end.
If you purchased your tickets with a credit card, you have some protection for United failing to provide the product, so you should be covered if they do not fly you there.
What I would do, if your resources allow, is to purchase another set of tickets on a different carrier. If you purchase "non-refundable" tickets they should be affordable and you can still use them within a two year window for a $100 change fee (for the most part) for each ticket. Another alternative is to purchase a more expensive fully refundable ticket, that you can get your money back on for any reason. Those will be VERY expensive.
Right now, charters are looking mighty attractive versus the scheduled carriers. Check with a local travel agent and see the prices. I know that from Baltimore, Newark, JFK, and Dulles, there are charters to Cancun in the $200 to $300 range.
If you would like me to have someone in my office look into some options for you, you can send me an email or a private message through this forum.

If our Government did it's job you would be protected, but they have not, and therefore you must buy your own "protection".
Northwest has a 90 day policy now, not 2 years, be very careful, and know what you are buying.
Asking a professional local travel agent is the best choice in my view. And well worth the fee they may have to add to the cost of your ticket.
REMEMBER AS A TRAVEL AGENT, IF I ISSUE A TICKET FOR 200.00 ON YOUR CREDIT CARD, THE ACTUAL TICKET COSTS US ABOUT 212.00 AS WE HAVE TO PAY THE AIRLINES FOR ALL THE PROCESSING COSTS, PLUS THE AIRLINE CHARGES US 3.5% PLUS TO PROCESS A SERVICE FEE. SO EVEN IF I ADD 30.00 TO THE 200.00 I STILL ONLY GET ABOUT 15.00 PROFIT.
This is a major reason the airlines are doing so poorly!!!! Travel agents are no longer interested in selling them, and the web sites will sell you anything, even if it is an "illegel connection"!!!!!
