View Full Version : Whats The Funniest Item You Ever Forgot On A Trip?

There was an article published on Tripso.com about this, but I can't seem to find it.
Two things come to mind. One was when I was a freshman in college and went to a weekend Bible workshop. My first night there, I went to change for bed and realized that I'd forgotten to pack clean underwear. I was so embarrassed, I didn't say anything to anyone.
The other was about four years ago. My then-husband and I were on our way to JFK for a flight to California. We were almost there when this exchange occurred:
Rick: "Honey, do you have my insulin?"
Me: "I thought you had it. You're the diabetic, not me!"
Cabbie: "Do you need to go back?"
We had to go back home and get his insulin. (Of course, I was the one who had to go up to our apartment and get it.) And yes, we still made our flight.
I'm divorced now - no insulin to worry about. However, I make a very detailed packing list approximately one month ahead of time, because I've found that if you pack the night before without some guidelines, two things will happen:
1. You're going to overpack.
2. You're going to forget something.
So... what's the craziest thing you ever forgot on a trip?

I don't know if it is ever funny to forget something when travelling, but I've travelled enough to forget most everything.
I've forgotten to pack underwear. I learned you can wash them out in the sink and they will dry overnight, but you need to roll them in a towel prior to hanging so that they are dry. I've also discovered that they sell underwear in most places I travel to. ;)
I've forgotten my hairbrush and discovered that hotels only stock combs in their "I forgot" drawer/closet. Thank goodness for late night pharmacies!
Prescription medications. Haven't forgotten them overseas, but in the US I've discovered that if there is a refill a pharmacist in DC can call mine in AL and transfer a prescription. I've also found that my doctor's office can call a pharmacist in the US to order a prescription.
I forgot to leave my rental car keys in the car I turned in. The rental counter in my destination city happily took car of getting them back to my departure city.
I've left shoes, cell phone chargers and even a hair dryer in a hotel room. I've never gotten any of these items back.
I left my suitcase at the house I was staying at and didn't discover my mistake until I arrived at the airport 70 miles away.
In case you think I'm a walking travel calamity, this represents about 22 years of frequent travelling, and I rarely repeat one of these omissions. Mostly, my travelling is smooth and I'm organized. And I rest easily knowing that I can make a trip to Target or WalMart and pick up anything I forgot.

we have left our pillows in a motel.....and the usual things too. My husband is OCD enough that we rarely forget anything big....I don't worry about the small stuff - there are always places to get them.

About 10 years ago, I made up a generic packing list. It has everything on it, from nightgowns to ashtrays to swim fins. When I'm packing for a trip, the first thing I do is cross off what I DON'T need. Then as I'm packing, I highlight the items on the list that I've placed on the bed, ready to go in the suitcase. After I've finished, I carry the list with me. Just in case the suitcase gets lost, I have a pretty good idea of what was in it if I have to make a claim.
I've added about a dozen things to the list over the years, but have not deleted anything. Guess you could call me a "pack rat".
I'm one of those last minute packers...so I pretty much always travel with at least 80lbs of suitcases filled with clothes (and yes, I sometimes get stuck paying at the airport, or have to pull my bags around with big orange HEAVY tags attached). And that's just for a weekend getaway...you should see me pack for 2 weeks in Hawaii. I need a forklift!
Usually, whatever someone else has forgotten, I've got in a bag somewhere.
What can I say, I like having options B)

Sometimes you actually find one! It all depends on which car service you call. Some will only hire drivers that speak fluent English. My ex-husband drove for a car service at the time that only hired English-speaking drivers, and my local car service does the same. However, if you take a yellow or medallion cab, you're taking your chances.

I had a client leave his car parked in front of the airport with the engine running. He got the flight attendant to call the DL BHM counter and one of their guys went and moved it to the parking deck and left his keys in will call for him. Obviously this was prior to 9/11.

Although it wasn't funny at the time, the most boneheaded forgotten item moment occurred to me on a business trip. I had very carefully packed my freshly pressed jacket and skirt, my button down shirt, and the necessary accoutrements to make myself look worth the money my employer was charging....and one shoe. I didn't notice until I unpacked my bag upon arriving at the hotel at 1 am (mechanical delays) that only one pump made it to my destination (I travel comfortably, in low lace up leathers, which wouldn't have worked). Thank heavens for 24 hour Wal-Marts!

When you travel as much as I do, you can forget most everything over a few years. One of my most upsetting was my cosmetic bag which has everything from scissors to qtips. The other was my camera. I know you can buy all this stuff, but it just isnt the same.

I've also made it once without one shoe.
Once my husband and I traveled somewhere and I made it there without any shirts, only had his shirts.

For a seven night stay - my husband packed 10 pairs of white socks and one pair of underwear.....Now it is a big joke.....he always brings too many socks...we usually travel to Caribbean or Florida and here he is with lots of socks that he doesn't wear....

Just last week my husband was driving to Florida for business. He left his clothes hanging up in the family room. Luckily I ran out and told him before he drove off.

There is nothing like forgetting your passport and watching your luggage go without you. A good thing luggage doesn't need a passport. :

Once I put my rings in the cleaning solution and forgot to put them on.
HONESTLY! I really forgot.
This is NOT something to do when going on a vacation with the girls.
You can really get in trouble this way. Of course, it was the FUN kind of trouble
but still!
I had some 'splaining to do when I got home!
